Work Order Guidelines

Work Orders can be named in two ways. Modeling the real world and the P&A way. To model the real world a Train Designator has been established at Train Designator or it can also be found under the Development Menu.

(1.) The Train Designator is a self-explanatory chart that shows you how to name a train that is going from a large yard to another. It can also be used for passenger operations, going from station to station. The Train Designator should not be used for local runs. A listing of all major yards and passenger stations and their abbreviations is available.

(2.) The P&A way uses a simple formula, but also gives you a clue as to what the work order pertains. PAWF-1-BO-LI-Lumber-P1 is an example of the P&A naming structure.

  1. PA is us, the P&A vr.
  2. WF is Whitefish, the route the work order is on.
  3. 1 is me, engineer ID #1.
  4. BO is the starting place, BOnnors Ferry
  5. LI is the LIbby Yard or LIbby area.
  6. Lumber is a short clue as to what you are doing, type of movement.
  7. P1 means it is the first part of a set, P2 & P3 would follow.
  8. The name can contain NO SPACES, use either - or _ for a space.
  9. The name can NOT be longer than 25 characters.

 Our routes are:

  1. WF - Whitefish 5
  2. CC - Cascade Crossing
  3. HP - Hoodoo Pass
  4. CS - Clinton Sub
  5. NC - North Coast
  6. TP - Tehachapi Pass
  7. CP - Cajon Pass

 The Work Order Briefing

In order to maintain a database, certain information is required in the briefing to be entered into the PATS work order database. Your briefing will look like this.

Briefing Header Example

Pacific & American Railroad Freight Work Order (c) 2004
Work Order: PAWF-1-BO-LI-Lumber-P1

Day: Monday
Time: 1:00 PM or 13:00
Season: Autumn
Weather: Clear
Duration: 1:35
Difficulty: Easy
Type: Freight Ops - Passenger - MOW
Engine: 2 P&A SD40-2

This would be followed by your instructions or a description of what the engineer will be doing and any special instructions.

Description Example

Orders: Your taking a load of loggers from Bonners Ferry Yard to Libby. It's hunting season. The hunters have the deer moving. Caution is advised.

A timetable of sorts would be a helpful item but is not mandatory. As you are developing a work order you are more than likely jotting down times anyway, so including this info in the briefing would be a plus.

Timetable Example

Approximate Timetable:
13:09 Crossport Siding
13:12 Crossport Quarry
13:20 Katka Siding
13:33 Leona Siding
13:41 Yakt Siding
13:55 Troy
14:06 Katenai Falls
14:21 Libby Main
14:30 Libby Yard #1
14:33 Libby #3

Followed by any special conditions or warnings you wish to specify.

Special Conditions Example

Traffic Advisory:
There are several west bound trains coming your way, depending on how you drive will determine if you have the right away. Keep a tight schedule.

Last is a optional sign-off with your ID # to identify you as the author.

We would like you to restrict your work order to 3 hours or less of driving time. In fact if possible you should split a 3 hour one into 2 parts of 1.5 hours each. But 3 hours is the MAXIMUM we will accept.

When you submit your work order to P&A it will be tested by a Feasibility Team to ensure it workd the way you intended and that there are no missing trains. When it passes testing a listing of the equipment used will be generated by Activity Analysis by Ernst Tollknaepper.
