Pacific & American Railroad Staff Guidelines

The Pacific & American Railroad is a new concept in virtual railroading. It is the intention of the management of the Pacific & American Railroad to provide a challenging and stimulating experience that makes virtual railroading as real as we can make it. Please note that this is >NOT< a training environment! Engineer applicants should already have the skills required to operate yard and road locomotives and complete assigned tasks with a minimum of supervision and assistance in an MSTS environment.

There are minimal time, participation and training requirements. Please make yourself familiar with these requirements before completing your application. While we do not wish to be overly rigid in the enforcement of these requirements the prospective Pacific & American Railroad engineer should be willing and able to make a commitment to meet and maintain these minimums.

If you are not sure you can meet our requirements then the Pacific & American Railroad is not for you!

Pacific & American Railroad engineers will be expected* to run 2 work orders per month. A minimum of 30 minutes is acceptable. There will be a large and growing selection of Pacific & American Railroad work orders (activities) that range in length from 15 minutes to 3 hours. Feel free to choose those that interest you.

Pacific & American Railroad engineers will be expected* to check into the message forums at least twice a week and post a response or ask a question when appropriate. Your time commitment here would only be 5 to 10 minutes per week. The forums will contain news of interest to all, information concerning new work orders, upcoming events, group chats, etc.

Pacific & American Railroad engineers will be expected* to participate in the group chats. These will usually take place once a month and last for 1 to 1½ hours. You learn from others and they learn from you when you participate in the chats. Discussions concerning activities, suggested new ideas, problems encountered, etc. are for the benefit of everyone. Discussing your work with your peers is part of what makes the experience more enjoyable.

* Note: All of the above time estimates are just examples. It is not a criterion that you MUST follow. It is merely an example to show the minimal amount of time required per month to be an active member.

• Upon acceptance as an employee at the Pacific & American Railroad new members will be classified as Probationary until they have completed work orders totaling a minimum of 15 hours. Upon completion of 15 hours you will be removed from probation and considered to be Conductors In Training for Engineer.

• Our Conductors in Training will be expected to complete a minimum total of 30 hours at the throttle to be promoted to Engineer In Training. As an Engineer in Training you will be allowed 60 days to enroll in the Diesel Engineers Training course at vNERR. Satisfactory completion of this course will complete your training and you will be recognized as a full fledged Pacific & American Railroad Engineer!

• All employees will be allowed to complete the vNERR Diesel Engineers Training Course at the same time they are amassing the required total of 30 hours, however, the hours awarded at completion of the Diesel Engineers Training Course will not be considered as satisfaction of the 30 hours required above. You must accomplish both!

• In accordance with all applicable (virtual) Federal regulations Pacific & American Railroad employees will not be allowed to report more than twelve hours worked in a twenty-four hour period . For the most part, our work orders should not exceed three hours in length.

From the above you can see that approximately 2½-3 hours per month is all that is needed to stay active.

Please remember that when you apply for a position with Pacific & American Railroad someone has to review your application, send you an acceptance letter, edit the Crew Callboard Database and assign you to a Division. This represents a considerable investment of their time in your success. Please do not abuse their time by submitting an application if you are unwilling to invest your own time in your success and the success of the Pacific & American Railroad.

The staff at Pacific & American Railroad understands that everyone has a life and things do change in people's circumstances. Although the guidelines may seem rigid to some, they are not intended to be. Three hours a month is minimal. In the event you find yourself unable to keep this commitment for a period of time we will work with you. Feel free to contact the Pacific & American Railroad Human Resources Director if there are issues that will affect your regular time commitment to Pacific & American Railroad.
