Converting and engine to use Maple Leaf Tracks sounds. Converting an engine over is quite easy when using MLT's sounds. They have allready set it up so you can easily alias the sounds to another engine. I have Cascade Crossing, the BN, NS and both SP Heriatge packs installed giving me several sound folders. MLT_Required and BNH_Required are 2 of them. Both of these folders contain more folders which have sounds and cabviews. First up, you need to decide which engine you want to convert and then which sounds you want to use. For our example I will convert the P&A SD70M to use MLT's sounds. Open the P&A SD70M eng file found in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator\TRAINS\TRAINSET\PA_SD70M. I will use PA_SD70M_8611.eng. ENG files are in UNICODE format. Your editor must support this format. In Windows 98 you will need to use WORDPAD. In Windows XP you can use either WORDPAD or NOTEPAD. Keep in mind not to change fonts or add colors, this will defintely mess things up. Upon opening the file you will be presented with something similar to this:
Scroll down through the lighting section until you find the sound entries
The hilited line has to be replaced. We need data to insert, so now it is time to open up an MLT eng file. I will use their SP SD70M so the sounds will match the P&A model. Goto C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator\TRAINS\TRAINSET\SP_SD70M_9823 and open SP_SD70M_9823.eng. Scroll down through the lighting section until you see the sound parameters. Then hilite the entire line as shown and copy it to the clipboard. (right click and choose copy)
Go back to the P&A eng file and paste the MLT line in it's place so it looks like this:
That takes care of the loco sounds you hear when you are outside the cab looking around or whatever you are doing. In the P&A SD70M eng file, scroll down further through all the brake parameters until you come to the cab sounds here:
Then go to the MLT SP SD70M eng file and find the same line:
When you have found it, hilite and copy it to the clipboard, go back to the P&A SD70M eng file and paste it in like we did with the other sounds so it looks like this:
Now save the P&A eng file and thats it! Your P&A engine will now be using the high quality MLT sounds inside and outside of the cab.
